I emerged into Philadelphia where there seemed to be a meeting regarding the young nation's affairs. I heard that the first plan of government called the Articles of Confederation was Ratified in 1781, the Articles reflected the fear of the states that a central government would exercise too much power over their citizens. The Articles of Confederation denied the U.S. Congress the power to collect taxes, regulate interstate commerce and enforce laws. As a result, the Articles allowed the individual states to retain the greatest share of governmental power. I asked an old woman was the meeting about and she replied "to create a strong central government made up of three separate branches; legislative, executive and judicial, so that one branch doesn't have a lot of power." After the meeting he delegates posted the principles of government on wall which were:
• Popular Sovereignty- the governments right to rule comes
from the people
• Limited Government- the government has only the powers
that the Constitution gives to it
• Separation of Powers-the Constitution divides the government
into three branches:
o Congress-legislative branch makes laws
o President-executive branch carries out the laws
o Courts-judicial branch explains and interprets the laws
• Checks and Balances-each branch of government has the
power to check or limit the actions of the other two
• Federalism-division of power between the federal government
and the states
• Republicanism- citizens elect representatives to carry out their
will
• Individual Rights-The Constitution protects individual rights
such as freedom of speech, freedom religion etc.
I sat down with a shopkeeper and he explained to me that these rights will protect us the people from personal desires and vanity, he also old me that this can help us preserve the future of the young generation. I got deeply tired of the revolutionary period because of all the arguing and waited until time came to take me.
